FIRST BOOK
First Book is a national nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. The primary goal of First Book is to work with existing literacy programs to distribute new books to children who, for economic reasons, have little or no access to books. In this way, First Book effectively leverages the heroic efforts of local tutoring, mentoring, and family literacy organizations, as they work to reach children who need help the most. In the year 2000, First Book distributed more than 4 million books to hundreds of thousands of children in more than 290 communities nationwide. First Book plans to expand and reach even more children and communties in the coming years.

Since its inception in 1966, RIF has grown into a national grass-roots network of more than 310,000 volunteers at 18,000 sites. Find out how RIF uses support from the U.S. Department of Education, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and countless individuals to place more than 200 million books in the hands and homes of children who need them most.

The Foundation was formed in early 1997 as a public, non-profit organization.  It is dedicated to:

	being a friend to all people with dyslexia and language-based learning differences,
	recognizing and celebrating their gifts,
	opening the doors of learning to them, and
	helping them to reach their full potential.
